Oden Antarctic Expedition '08

From Jeff Peneston  “Real science begins where the classroom ends!”

I will leave for my 2-month expedition aboard the Swedish icebreaker Oden during the week before Thanksgiving. About 10 scientists from the US as well as an equal number of Swedish scientists will board the Oden in Montevideo, Uruguay along with a group of support staff and one school teacher (me). We will then travel for about 12 days as we head to the coast of Antarctica including a trip through the wild Drake Passage. Once we reach the sea ice the Oden will push through the sea ice of the Amundsen Sea for about 450 miles. During the 4 week transect we will collect data on the sea ice, the ocean depths and the diseases of seals. We plan to reach McMurdo Station about Jan 10th and then fly off the ice and head to New Zealand on Jan 13th.
